The secrets of a perfect flame
Recommendations for lighting your candles
At Lumière d’Armor, each candle is the result of artisanal craftsmanship and special attention paid to the quality of the wax, fragrances, and wicks.
To fully enjoy your candle and encourage even burning, a few simple steps can make all the difference.
A candle is a small flame born from patient work, carefully chosen fragrance, and the simple pleasure of creating light.
When you light it, you bring this moment back to life: the moment when the wax melts gently, the wick awakens, and the light dances on the glass walls.
Wood wick candles
Wood wick candles offer a soft, subtle flame accompanied by a light crackling sound reminiscent of a fireplace on an autumn evening.
The flame of a wood wick may be smaller than that of a cotton wick: this is normal, as long as it remains stable, the wax melts gradually, and the fragrance diffuses.
To light it properly, just a little patience is needed: let the flame take hold across the entire width of the wood.
- During the first burn, let the candle burn until the entire wax surface is liquid. This prevents tunneling and promotes more even combustion.
- Light the wood wick using a long lighter or long matches.
- The flame must fully ignite the entire width of the wick.
- If the flame goes out, gently remove the excess blackened wood before relighting.
- A wood wick may produce a soft crackling sound, which is characteristic of this type of wick.
Cotton wick candles
Cotton wick candles, more classic but just as delicate, require a little maintenance before each lighting.
- Trim the wick to about 5 mm before each use to prevent a flame that is too high or excessive smoke.
- Ensure the wick remains straight and centered.
- During the first burn, let the entire surface of the wax melt before extinguishing the candle.
- Avoid drafts, which can cause the flame to flicker and impair the quality of the burn.
Essential precautions
To enjoy your candle with complete peace of mind:
- never leave a burning candle unattended;
- place it on a flat, stable, and heat-resistant surface;
- keep it away from children, pets, curtains, and any flammable materials;
- never move a candle while it is lit or while the wax is still liquid;
- do not let your candle burn for more than 2 to 3 consecutive hours;
- stop using it when there is about 1 cm of wax left at the bottom of the container.
In summary
Light your candle in a moment of calm.
Let it diffuse its light and fragrance.
Take the time to observe the flame, listen to its quiet whisper, and reconnect with the gentleness of daily life.
Let the magic happen… and enjoy the present moment.
